Trekking in Nepal in May Reveals Rhododendron at Higher Altitudes

The trekkers and travelers from all around the world embark in for trekking in Nepal to see beautiful blossoming rhododendron flower. The word ‘rhododendron is derived from two greek words ‘rhodos’ which means roses and Dendron refers to ‘trees’. Therefore, rhododendron is the rose like species of flower that blossoms on trees. These flowers are visible from nearly 1500 m of altitudes with pure red color and diversify in color as the altitude increases. There are more than 28000 cultivars of Rhododendron in the International Rhododendron Registry held by the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK. We can spot more than 30 species of rhododendron at different regions of Nepal, and red one is the local favorite which is also the national flower of Nepal.

During the months of March and April, these beautiful rhododendron starts to blossom at lower elevations announcing the beginning of Spring season with longer and warmer days. In the similar way, the late April and May is the time when the rhododendrons will be in bloom at higher altitudes at above 3000 meters. Main areas where we can find rhododendron trees during a in May would be at Ghorepani region in Annapurna, above Namche Bazaar in Everest. Also at Makalu Barun National Park, Langtang Area and Milke Danda offers great opportunity to spot rhododendron trees.  It is also possible to see Rhododendron flowers around Kathmandu in spring season around Phulchowki hills, at Shivapuri national park, and around Chandragiri hill.
