In Love With Nepal

Why am I in love with Nepal? Here writes Ms. Isabelle Lippitsch her reasons for being in love with Nepal.

I am French - a citizen of the country that is envied worldwide for both its beauty and culture. France indeed offers diversity of landscapes which very few countries boasts of. Travelling in France is like entering into dozens ofpictures, each of which delights you equally. Within a few hours, one can travel between myraid landscapes: From what we consider high mountains (Mont Blanc 4811 meters high) to some volcanic mountains towards the center of the country; from strolling beside the calm and deep blue Mediteraneen Sea to walking along rural countryside with old stone houses before feeling the spray of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Or, you could admire the monuments of Paris and cycle through the city's castles, getting the feel of the lives the French kings lived. The north western coast is still wild and little populated, the nature still preserved there; it’s a paradise for those who love solitary way of life. For warmer climate, one can take a ferry to reach the enchanteress island of Corsica in the south east of the mainland; the rythm of life there is slow and pleasant. Every part of France has its own unique food, locals are equally proud of their own culinary specialities. So why is it that coming from such a priviledged country, I am in love with Nepal? Undoubtedly, I cherish picturesque mountains, but beyond these, there are the Nepali people. That’s them who give me such a sense of well being here. Everything else comes second. I love Nepalis for who they are, and without any expectation. Nepalis of different ethnicities and cultures live in harmony; each group has developed a tremendous amount of tolerance and patience among each other, which doesn’t stop surprising me over the years. In Nepal, I have seen and experienced more kindness than anywhere else in my entire life. While Westerners pass Sotang village in Solukhumbu district to conquer Nepal's high mountains, thousands of men, women and children live quietly on the hills of this village, engaged in farming and without any wish to conquer any mountain. They live in harmony with the nature; the nature makes them beautiful and strong. Perhaps, it's because of their closeness with the nature that they carry within themselves values of joy and kindness. These are precious values that make a good human being. Where else other than nature could those values come from? There, I heard more laughter than anywhere else - laughter of kids running barefoot in the fields, kids for whom the word freedom still holds its true meaning. In the countryside or in the mountains, people live with the rythm of seasons, not feeling or being pushed by anything or anybody. On a path, an elderly woman handed me a piece of grapefruit, showing toothless gums as she smiled at me. The graprefruit had the taste of true kindness. The woman had no expectation from me; the moment we shared was one of pure generosity, and there was no question about my origins or hers. It was an act of pure kindness that needed no word to describe. That reminded me of old days with my grandmother in her dear countryside, when times were not about rushing after pure illusion of power and money, where life was about enjoying every moment in peace.Another time in Do Tarap in Upper Dolpa, after staying a few days at Miss Tshoten’s house, she handed me a khada, taking my hands in hers for a few minutes. I could see in her eyes more kindness than I had ever seen. Her blessings were sincere and generous.I carry those precious moments within me to this day. And the list of such moments in Nepal is endless. It seems that the values of kindness and care are better preserved in an environment where nature is protected. But even here in Kathmandu, despite the crazy rhythm of the city, I am in contact with many people who teach me this wonderful way of being everyday. Those values can and must be kept alive and practiced anywhere.Indeed, Nepal is a precious school for tolerance, kindness and joy. Nepali can be proud of who they are. Through them, I am learning how to become a better human being away from the competition and the excellence of my country. Let’s hope that those values will be preserved despite the changes in Nepal’s society. Humans without humanity would be purposeless.
