Kathmandu World Heritage Sites Now Open Months After Earthquake
UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu valley are now open from today which were badly affected by recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Kripashur Sherpa formally opened the heritage sites at a function graced by cultural program in Bhaktapur Durbar Square premises.
Government authorities have decided to open these heritage sites after close inspection and applying necessary safety measures to avoid possible risks. UNESCO had raised some concerns during the safety but it is now completely safe to visit around these heritage sites. The popular Basantapur Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Lalitpur Durbar Square, famous for their Malla-era architecture and wooden crafts, are among those that are open. Likewise, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa and Boudhanath Stupa will also allow visitors. Whereas, Changunarayan Temple, another world heritage site in Bhaktapur, however, will be opened at a later date as reparation work is yet to complete here.
