PDNA-report-Proposed-Nepal-Tourism-Year-for-Welcoming-Visitors

Post Disaster Need Assessment (PDNA) report prepared by Nepal Planning Commission (NPC) proposed Nepal Government to declare 2017 and 2018 as VISIT NEPAL TOURISM YEAR for welcoming visitors as by then rebuilding projects will also be completed. NPC insisted that tourism sector should also be re-build, re-branded for lifting up image of tourism in Nepal.

The report shows that huge amount of reconstruction works should be done and better coordination with support of key stakeholders is needed to assure visitors that Nepal is safe to visit. As Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the private sector have been spending a combined Rs2.20 billion annually on tourism marketing and promotion during normal times, the outlay has to be increased multiple fold to revive the market, the report said. The tourism sector has sustained significant physical damage in the affected districts, but more importantly, it is expected to suffer major economic losses over the next two-three years as a result of the earthquake. Also High-end cultural/luxury tourism is likely to suffer relatively more than the other varieties.

The estimation of report discloses that around 40 percentages of tourists will decline in next 12 months and around 20 percent reduction will occur in number of incoming visitors. The decrease in number of visitors will effect in their spending and eventually affects adversely about 21 billion NPR loss for period between months of May to December. Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) has reported that 40,000 employees mainly guides, porters and cooks engaged in the trekking sector had no work to do between May to July and they were sent home. This shows that earthquake makes unemployment ratio also to increase drastically.

With consideration that there are more women employed in tourism sector than men, it can be concluded as more women will lose their job than men especially in less skillful jobs.
