Rato Machhindranath Chariot Procession Begins at Bungmati

Lalitpur(RSS): The Rato Machhindranath festival celebrated once in twelve years started on Wednesday along with chariot procession from Bungmati in Lalitpur. The route of the chariot procession starts at Bungmati and passes through Pulchowk, Gabahal, Sundhara, Lagankhel and ends at Jawalakhel with ‘Boto Jatra’ or the festival of vest.

It is believed that Rato Machhindranath is god of rain and good harvest by local people. This special festival is called as “Bara Barse Macchindranath Jatra” which means once in a twelve years festival.The chariot procession is organized annually from Pulchowk but during this once in 12 years festival, sit starts from Bungmati in lalitpur according to local organizing authorities and event managers. The village of Bungamati, regarded as the birthplace of Machchhindranath, is a heritage Newari town located 10 km from central Kathmandu.

The chariot pulling process was initiated Wednesday at 3pm after completion of necessary pujas and traditions. There were large number of locals, devotees, journalists and authorities viewing the important festival in Nepal.
