Kathmandu: South Korean pianist Karam Kim and the ‘Piano and Ice Cream’ team successfully held the first ever ‘Himalayas Piano Concert’ in Thorang-La Pass on October 21. The concert was held thrice — from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm — and some 100 people (including trekkers, guides and local people) passing by Thorang-La Pass at an altitude of 5,416m, got to witness it as per a press release issued by Piano and Ice Cream.

Kim, the world champion pianist of 2001 and also known for her role as pianist in South Korean drama Tomorrow Cantabile, played the piano in the Annapurna region to help Nepal in the aftermath of April earthquake, as per the press statement.

“With the slogan ‘hope for Nepal, act for Nepal’, the Piano and Ice Cream team prepared this concert to help locals affected by the April earthquake,” the release mentioned. The event aims to help raise funds for Nepal’s reconstruction post-earthquake.

And the organisers chose Thorang-La Pass as the concert venue for a reason. “It is the dream destination for trekkers walking along the Annapurna circuit trek. Every year it was filled with trekkers who used to come here to feel the beauty of Mother Nature before the earthquake. But after the big earthquake in Nepal, trekkers stopped coming to this place in spite of little damage.”

With this concert, the organisers want to generate the world’s continuous interest in Nepal’s earthquake recovery and normalisation of the country’s tourism industry while conveying a message that Nepal is safe for tourists.

The team held the first subsequent concert for children marginalised in music and cultural benefits by living in the slum of Pokhara on October 27. The second subsequent concert will be held in Hanumandhoka Durbar Square in Kathmandu in December.
