Trip Overview

Helambu trek is considered as one of the easy and short trek towards the north of the Kathmandu Valley. Helambu Trek does not take you to very harsh high altitude but still provides you very good time of viewing snow clad mountains. Due to the trail being easy and at lower altitude Helambu trek is a easy and preferred as family trekking site as all the family members can experience the joy of trekking regardless their age. This trek offers the views of snow capped mountains alongside trekking through greenery of rhododendron and bamboo forest.

We begin our trek from Sundarijal after driving about an hour from Kathmandu. We will enter the Shivapuri National Park after walking about an hour. Trekking along the Chisapani, Kutumsang, Thadepati and Sermathang, the trek concludes at the Melamchi Pul Bazar in Helambu region. The culture of Sherpa and Tamang people can be seen with number of beautiful Buddhist monasteries along the trekking route. The snow capped mountains like Gang Chhenpo, Jugal Himal, Nayagang Himal, Dorje Lakpa,Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung are offered to observe in this Helambu trek.

No trekking experience is required whatsoever to start off this ultimate easy yet astounding trek and best experienced with your family.

Helambu Trek – 10 days Day to day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu

As you land at Tribhuvan International airport, finish your custom formalities (visa, etc.) and get to the airport waiting terminal, you will find our representative waiting to greet you. He/she will be holding Icicles Adventure Treks and Tour signboard and your name. You will be then transferred to your respective hotel in our private vehicle.Overnight at hotel. Accommodation: City Hotel.

Day 02: Trek preparation and city tour

After breakfast we start a guided tour of several historical and spiritual sites in Kathmandu which are also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhists shrine (Bhoudhanath) which is one of the large Stupas in the world. Later after sightseeing program, we will introduce you with your trekking guide and have a small pre-trip meeting. You are advised to pack your things and be set up for your actual adventure that will begin the next day overnight at hotel Accommodation: City Hotel.

Day 03: Drive to Sundarijal & trek to Chisapani (2300m), 4 hrs

After breakfast at about 8 am, we take an one hour drive to Sundarijal (1350m). The unpaved road from Kathmandu turns into a trail near a small hydroelectric plant. The trail will enter through the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve at Sundarijal. We start our trek from here. The first settlement we will come across is Mulkharka with Tamang inhabitants. The route heads down the ridge through a forest of oaks and rhododendron to Chisapani. Accommodation: Local lodge. Included Meals: B,L,D

Day 04: Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang (2446m), 5 hrs

After breakfast, we start our trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang which takes about seven hours. The trail continues to drop from Chisapani on a good, sometimes level, trail that crosses meadow and fields. You will then descend through Pathi Bhanjyang till Gul Bhanjyang. The trail climbs the ridge from Gul Bhanjyang to another pass at 2620m. The meadow makes a good camping spot, its downhill to Kutumsang at 2470m, in a saddle atop the ridge. Day 05: Trek from Kutumsang to Tharipati (3650m), 5 hrs

After breakfast trek to Tharipati which takes about five hours. The trek continues north up the Yurin Danda ridge and affords views of the peaks. The trail climbs above Kutumsang on a steep, eroded trail mostly through fir and rhododendron forest where there are no permanent settlements. Now you will be in Thara pati. There are few lodges and Goths (Domestic Animal Shed). Accommodation: Local lodge. Included Meals: B,L,D

Day 06: Trek from Tharipati to Tarkeghyang (2743m), 5 hrs

After breakfast trek to Tarkeghyang and it takes about six hours. The early part of the trek descends until you cross the stream named as Melamchi. Now you trek gently up to Tarkeghyang passing through Sherpa settlements. Tarkeghyang is a beautiful Sherpa village with one of the oldest and biggest monasteries. Tarkeghyang, also known as Helambu is named after the Helmu caste. The Sherpa people living here originally belong to Helmu caste. Accommodation: Local lodge. Included Meals: B,L,D

Day 07: Trek from Tarkeghyang to Shermathang (2621m), 4 hrs

After breakfast trek to Shermathang which takes about four hours. This day the trail is quite easier through flat land with beautiful forests on the way. You trek on crossing some small streams on the way. There is situated a beautiful village on the half way to Shermathang. To add your joy, Shermathang is another pretty Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries. From here you can see Jugal Himal range at the north face of Shermathang village. Accommodation: Local lodge. Included Meals: B,L,D

Day 08: Trek from Shermathang to Malachi Pul Bazaar (846m), 5 hrs

After breakfast trek to Malachi Pul Bazaar and it takes approximately five hours. The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, you come across several old villages with their own particular tradition. Walking this day is quite pleasant with mountain views and interaction with local. Accommodation: Local lodge. Day 09: Drive back to Kathmandu

Drive back to Kathmandu. Its about 5-6 hours drive. Accommodation: City Hotel. Included Meals: B,L

Day 10: Departure

Today your Helambu Trekking trip comes to an end. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. Approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight a representative from Icicles Adventure Treks and Tour will take you to the airport for your flight back home.
