Trip Overview

Upper Mustang Trek takes you to trans-Himalayan region at northern Annapurna region of Nepal. Located above 4000m, with Tibetan influenced cultures, you will explore variation in topography from deserted to tropical and landscape sceneries.

At Mustang Region, we see mostly dry and rough terrains spectacularly beautiful rock formation with highlighted cave at the cliffs. Mustangi’s follows Tibetan Buddhism, therefore, we get opportunities to visit ancient monasteries, huge chortens and get insights into Buddhist cultures.

With quite similar culture and topography like of Tibet, local inhabitants follow the heritages and centuries old lifestyle. The whole area gives us an isolated feeling which enchants and inspires any visitors. The major highlight or the attraction is Lo-Manthang palaces. Until 1992, Mustang region was forbidden for outsiders and still very less permits are issued per year at this region.

During this exciting Upper Mustang Trek, walk through the land of canyon vistas. These surround and revolve around the enormous valley of the Kali Gandaki. Crossing the rugged land where people have saved their century’s old culture in Buddhist chortens, small stupas, and top hills. The pathways leads into villages and even inside caves. Even though Nepal is a federal republic democratic country, Mustang still even have a king, and local Mustangis respect him as the head of their tribe. While exploring around the city, visit the three red-walled monasteries at the heart of the town, watch the astonishing way of living and family life around the nomadic villages.

Watch the extracting of wools from the sheep, harvest barley, wheat. Don’t get blurred if you got to see their ancient funeral rituals in which they cut the dead body in three parts and feed one part to animals (dogs) other to birds and remaining they flush into the river.

We then start hiking from Jomsom, the first day we make up to Kagbeini, the entry point of Mustang Region. Kagbeni comprises eye catching natural deserted landscapes and natural beauty. We arrive at the capital of Mustang (Lo-manthang) making our way through the banks of Kaligandaki River upstream. We visit the oldest Buddhist monasteries like Lo-Gekar Gompa and Samye Gompa. It is one of the major attractions among the trekkers trekking in this region.

Upper Mustang is realm of last nomads of Mustang, still living their traditional migratory lifestyle on high plateaus bordering Tibet. We visit some of Mustang’s most far-flung villages such as Ghara, Yara and Tangge (in the spring), have salt-butter tea and bartering for locally-woven textiles with the villagers in their stone and sun baked mud bricks houses. If its during time of Tiji Festival, we see and enjoy the colorful culture and tradition of local Mustangis.

If you are looking for a “off the beaten path” cultural trek then Upper Mustang trek is a great off the beaten trek. Whereas if you are and adventure avid, then Upper Dolpo Trek would give you a great taste of adventure in the Trans-Himalayan remote region.  Please explore through our website for more other exciting trekking programs and select that suits you from our list of easy treks, short treks, challenging treks, strenuous treks, and adventurous trekking packages.

Upper Mustang Trek Note:

We strongly suggest scheduling an extra day in Kathmandu post-trek in case of flight delays or cancellations out of Jomsom! It is possible to shorten the trek by driving from Lo Monthang directly back to Jomsom or taking a helicopter from any of the villages back to Jomsom or Kathmandu. You can also make a stopover in Pokhara for a night or two. Let us know if you want any moderation in this itinerary.
