Are you are a dedicated mountaineer who aspires to conquer a peak in the bewitching Himalayas? In that case, Mt. Ama Dablam is ideal for you. Positioned southward of the fascinating Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse; Mt. Ama Dablam rises to an elevation of 6,856m asl. As the matter of fact, this very mountain is just 12 km away from the vertex of Mt. Everest in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Undoubtedly, Mt. Ama Dablam is a stunning snow-capped peak, which tends to delight the Mountaineers with a fondness for inspiring technical rock-ice-snow ascends. Hence, it occupies the place of the third most acclaimed Himalayan peak for permitted expeditions. In addition, Ama Dablam is also referred to as ‘Matterhorn of the Himalayas’ due to its distinctive pyramid-shaped granite structure that provides an outlook bearing certain similarity with its European counterpart.

The name Ama Dablam is derived from two Nepali words Ama and Dablam, which is translated as “Mother’s Necklace”. The long ridges on each side have the appearance like the arms of a mother safeguarding her child, and the hanging glacier on the southwest face of the mountain resembles one of "Dablam"; a traditional ornament used by Sherpa females. The foremost climbing periods are April-May before the monsoon season and September-October after the monsoon. In-between these periods of time, the alluring peak of Mt. Ama Dablam bestows heavenly panoramas comprising Mt. Everest (8,848m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Makalu (8,463m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m), and other many mountains during the climb as well as on its summit.

It is possibly the most elegant mountaintop on the entire planet; however, a summit expedition is accompanied by vertical walls and sharp exposed ridges from camp I to camp III. Eventually, the ascent concludes with the steep climb across the snowfields, ice tunnels, and snow blocks situated at the doorstep to the top. For these reasons, Mt. Ama Dablam is considered the most technical and punishing for even seasoned mountaineers. The prominent climbing route to date is the Southwest Ridge, which encompasses sensible difficulty level and good camp platforms at strategic points, alongside fine and varied climb. Mt. Ama Dablam was first conquered on the 13th of March, 1961 by the climbing team of Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (USA), Michael Gill, Mike Ward (UK), and Wally Romanes (NZ), led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Also, the youngest Briton ever to conquer the very mountain is the British adventurer, writer, and television presenter Bear Grylls renowned for his television series Man vs. Wild.

The conquest of Mt. Ama Dablam constantly demands unswerving combinations of skills including rock climbing, an experience of high altitude, ice climbing, and general technical prowess as climbers are required to prevail over abrupt ice sections at higher elevations on their climbing trail. Thus, more than just an ordinary climb, an escapade to Mt. Ama Dablam is soberly breathtaking!!!
