The trekkers and travelers from all around the world embark on trekking in Nepal to see beautiful blossoming rhododendron flowers. The word ‘rhododendron is derived from two Greek words ‘Rhodes which means roses and Dendron refers to ‘trees’. Therefore, rhododendron is a rose-like species of flower that blossoms on trees. These flowers are visible from nearly 1500 m of altitudes with pure red color and diversify in color as the altitude increases. There are more than 28000 cultivars of Rhododendron in the International Rhododendron Registry held by the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK. We can spot more than 30 species of rhododendron in different regions of Nepal, and the red one is the local favorite which is also the national flower of Nepal.
During March and April, these beautiful rhododendron starts to blossom at lower elevations announcing the beginning of the Spring season with longer and warmer days. Similarly, late April and May is the time when the rhododendrons will be in bloom at higher altitudes above 3000 meters. The main areas where we can find rhododendron trees in May would be at the Ghorepani region in Annapurna, above Namche Bazaar in Everest. Also at Makalu Barun National Park, Langtang Area and Milke Danda offer great opportunities to spot rhododendron trees. It is also possible to see Rhododendron flowers around Kathmandu in the spring season around Phulchowki hills, at Shivapuri national park, and around Chandragiri hill.
